How does a reed diffuser work?
A reed diffuser gently draws fragrance from the bottle and releases it into the surrounding air.
The rattan reeds contain tiny channels that carry the scented liquid upwards. It then evaporates from the exposed part of each reed, creating a steady background fragrance without a flame or source of electricity.
This makes a diffuser particularly useful in places where you would like a room to smell welcoming throughout the day. Hallways, guest rooms and living spaces are all natural choices.
Unlike a candle, a diffuser does not produce its full effect immediately. After placing the reeds in the bottle, allow around 24 to 48 hours for the fragrance to travel upwards and begin dispersing properly.
How long should a 250ml reed diffuser last?

“Up to six months” is a guide rather than an exact lifespan. Two identical diffusers can last for different lengths of time when placed in different homes. A bottle beside a warm radiator or sunny window will usually be used more quickly than one kept in a cooler, settled part of the room.
The strength of the fragrance can also feel different from scent to scent. Fresh pine, bright citrus, warm spice and deeper amber notes each have their own character. A fragrance that feels softer does not necessarily mean the diffuser has stopped working.
What affects how long a reed diffuser lasts?
Several simple factors influence how quickly the liquid evaporates.
Room temperature
Warmth encourages evaporation. A diffuser kept in a consistently warm room may release fragrance more quickly, but its liquid is also likely to be used sooner.
Keep the bottle away from radiators, fireplaces and other direct sources of heat. This helps the fragrance disperse more gradually and consistently.
Direct sunlight
A bright windowsill may look like the obvious place for an amber glass bottle, but strong direct sunlight can warm it throughout the day. A side table, shelf or console away from the window is usually a better position.
Airflow
Some movement in the air helps carry fragrance around a room. Too much, however, can increase evaporation.
Try to avoid placing your diffuser immediately beside an open window, external door, fan or strong draught. In a hallway, choose a sheltered console or shelf rather than the breeziest spot.
The number of reeds
More reeds generally create a more noticeable fragrance because there is a larger surface area releasing it into the air. They can also use the liquid more quickly.

How often the reeds are turned

There is no need to follow a rigid timetable. If the scent has become quieter, carefully turn a few reeds rather than automatically turning all eight every week. Always wear gloves when handling used reeds and protect the surrounding surface from drips.
Where is the best place to put a reed diffuser?
The ideal position is somewhere stable, sheltered from direct heat and sunlight, with enough gentle air movement to help the fragrance circulate.
A few placements that work particularly well are:
- A hallway console, where the scent can greet you as you come home.
- A living-room shelf or sideboard away from the radiator.
- A guest room, providing a gentle fragrance without needing to light a candle.
- A home office, where a diffuser can work quietly throughout the day.
Place the bottle on a suitable protective coaster or tray. Diffuser liquid can damage polished, painted, plastic or leather surfaces if it is spilled, so it should never sit directly on these materials or near electrical equipment.
Why can I no longer smell my reed diffuser?
Sometimes a diffuser seems to become less noticeable even though there is plenty of liquid left.
Our sense of smell naturally becomes accustomed to familiar fragrances. You may stop noticing a scent that a visitor can detect as soon as they enter the room. Leaving the room for a while and returning can help you judge it more accurately.
If the fragrance genuinely feels lighter, check that the diffuser has not been moved into a very large, cold or enclosed space. You can also turn a few reeds carefully or add more of the supplied reeds if you started with fewer.
Moving the diffuser to a different position may help, but avoid repeatedly carrying an open bottle around the house. Choose a stable spot and give it a little time to settle.
